Founded in 1799.  Eden Baptist Church is a small cozy and friendly church located on Mount Desert Island in the town of Salisbury Cove.  We are a Bible Believing Congregation with a desire to serve our Lord, Jesus Christ. Good morning on this, the 19th day of March, in the year of the Lord, 2023. It is also the 78th day of this year as well. If you are reading this, along with all who don’t, we have made it through another St. Patrick’s Day and are prepared to move on to the coming Easter and the events that might be planned that you will take part in. As for Eden Baptist Church, we are planning a Maundy Thursday Service on Thursday, April 6 @ 6:30 pm. It is a solemn service of remembrance of Jesus and his disciples in the upper room where they experienced the “last supper” as it has become known. We will have a service of communion as the final event of the evening. If you are in our area, we’d love to have you join us if your church does not have such a service. Of course, Easter is just around the corner (April 9th) and would extend an open invitation to join Eden Baptist for our 9:00 a.m. service if you don’t have a church home. There are four accounts of the Last Supper which I encourage you to read to remind you of that historic event in the life of Christ and his followers and the necessity of what was to follow for God to provide the greatest sacrifice for man’s sin with the perfect, sinless “Lamb of God.” Matthew 26:17–29; Mark 14:12–25; Luke 22:7–38; and I Corinthians 11:23–25 is where you will find the accounts as recorded by his disciples. By-the-way, Corinthians was written by the Apostle Paul. There is a lot of history, myth and legends around St. Patrick and many quotes attributed to him. These are from a Google search that produced 103,000,000 hits. The primary source is a site listed as “azquotes dot com “May the strength of God pilot us, may the wisdom of God instruct us, may the hand of God protect us, may the word of God direct us. Be always ours this day and for evermore.” “If I have any worth, it is to live my life for God.” “Christ beside me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ within me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me.” “I pray to God to give me perseverance and to design that I be a faithful witness to Him to the end of my life for my God.” As you can see, St. Patrick was a man, a least from his quotes, who had a deep relationship with the Lord. As you ponder these quotes, is there any one that particularly draws you in? Hymns are an important part of the worship service. It would be nice to do a poll of your favorite hymn but this setting doesn’t allow it. Perhaps if you respond with a like or heart or some other feeling you might mention one. Some hymns have a great history / story behind their being written. One story that is pretty well known is the hymn, “It is Well with My Soul.” The source is godtube dot com/popular-hymns "It Is Well with My Soul" is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. After suffering the loss of his children, Spafford wrote this beautiful hymn as a testament to the salvation he found in Jesus through the good and bad times in life. How blessed it is that even in times of hardship and sorrow we can look to Christ and say, "It is well with my soul." The Story Behind It Is Well With My Soul This incredible story of faith belongs to Horatio Spafford (1828-1888). Much like Job, he placed his trust in God during his life’s prosperity, but also during its calamities. A devout Christian who’d immersed himself in Scripture; many years of his life were joyous. He was a prominent Chicago lawyer, whose business was thriving. He owned several properties throughout the city. He and his beloved wife had four beautiful daughters and one son. Life was more than good — it was blessed. But faith, no matter how great, does not spare us from adversity. Just as Horatio hit the pinnacle of his profession and financial success, things began to change. It began with the tragic loss of their son. Not long thereafter, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed nearly every real estate investment Horatio owned. Just a few years later in 1873, Horatio decided to treat his wife and daughters to a much-needed escape from the turmoil. He sent them on a boat trip to Europe, with plans to join them shortly after wrapping up some business in Chicago. Just a few days later, he received a dreadful telegram from his wife, “Saved alone…” It bore the excruciating news that family’s ship had wrecked and all four of his daughters had perished. Horatio was on his way to meet his heartbroken wife, passing over the same sea that had just claimed the lives of his remaining children. It was then that he put his pen to paper and the timeless hymn was born, beginning with the words: When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul. Famous hymn composer, Philip Bliss (1838-1876), was so moved by Horatio’s prose, that he composed a peaceful tune to accompany the words. The song was published by Bliss and Sankey, in 1876. It’s incredible to think such encouraging and uplifting words were born from the depths of such unimaginable sorrow. It’s an example of truly inspiring faith and trust in the Lord. And it goes to show the power our God has to overcome even the darkest times of our earthly life.” As you happen to read this and are in the area of 155 Old Bar Harbor Road, Salisbury Cove at our worship time of 9:00a, drop in, we’d love to have you enhance our worship time.
