Our Story

The first meeting house in the town of Eden,

according to the Rev. Geo E. Street’s “History of Mount Desert,” was erected at Hull’s Cove in 1799. On July 5th of that year,as a result of a meeting held at the house of Levi Higgins at Hull’s Cove, the Baptist Church of Eden was organized, the oldest Baptist Church in the County of Hancock and second church on the island of Mount Desert. There were thirty charter members.

The “western” meeting-house near the Northeast Creek Bridge was built about the year 1823, when the town appropriated $350 for that purpose. Meetings were held in this building from 1824 to 1875, when the Baptist Church at Salisbury’s Cove was built.

Eden Baptist Church is a participating member of the American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA) and the American Baptist Churches of Maine (ABCOM).

Our Beliefs & Values

Having, as we trust, been brought by divine grace to repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and to give up ourselves to him, and having been baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.

Unity

We will work and pray for the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Liberty

We will rejoice at each other’s happiness, and with tenderness and sympathy bear each other’s burdens and sorrows.

Love

We will walk together in Christian love, exercising affectionate care and watchfulness over each other, faithfully exhorting, encouraging and entreating one another as occasion may require, loving each other even as Christ loved us.

Sanctification

We will live carefully in the world, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, remembering that as God’s children saved for His glory we have a special obligation to lead new and holy lives.

Faithful

We will work together for the continuance of a faithful Christian ministry in this church, as we sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrines, and strive for its advancement in knowledge, holiness and peace.
